See The Quill Feather, a simple quilt by Nina Clotfelter that makes a huge impact.

The Quill Feather was made for a specific spot in Nina's house. In her stairwell, there's a long, narrow wall that's always been blank in need of something to fill the void, and The Quill Feather took up that position. So Nina made the background of the quilt, and then added the feathers on top of it. The feathers themselves came from a pre-fused laser cut kit. She tweaked and trimmed some of the feathers, and moved some of them around into different positions, to create her own look for it. She then had fun quilting the background, which was all done with straight lines and ruler work.
