Who is Vickie Wheatley?

Vickie Wheatley is a contemporary quilt maker in Louisville, Kentucky. Her work captures the feelings of vibrancy, energy, and anxiety that swirl around and within us as we experience life. She uses the techniques of strip-piecing, slicing, and restructuring to craft a response to her feelings about the effects of change on our personal lives, our systems, and memory. While working and raising a family, Vickie followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmothers. She learned to sew and make whatever was needed; from home décor, to camping gear, to clothing. After retiring, she turned to quilt making as an art form. The quilts of Gee’s Bend, and other contemporary quilts with bold, abstract designs and rich colors, were her inspiration.

Vickie’s quilts have been juried into a variety of quilt exhibitions, including Form Not Function, Fantastic Fibers, and Quilts=Art=Quilts in Indiana, Kentucky, and New York. One of Vickie’s quilts received the Award of Excellence in 2024 at the Annual Juried Show in Jasper, Indiana. And two quilts shared the Best of Show Award this year at Harrison County Arts Annual Juried Show in Corydon, Indiana.

Vickie’s work has been shown extensively in Kentucky, including at the Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, the Kentucky Artisan Center of Berea, and the Kore and Pyro Galleries in Louisville.
