Martha’s Vineyard – Time to Think about the Harvest
This is the time of year that the harvest begins to come in. In far West Texas our landscape turns white as the cotton balls form among cotton fields as far as the eye can see. In other parts of the country grapes are harvested as this beautiful quilt reminds us. The Martha’s Vineyard pattern appeared on the batting wrapper for the Mountain Mist company beginning in 1931.
Mathematical Star Quilt
The Museum of Texas Tech University is celebrating the promised gift of 450 quilts from quilt historian Lisa Erlandson with an exhibition featuring 40 of her quilts, on display now through August 17, 2025. One of the quilts Mrs. Erlandson has already donated to the museum is the beautiful 1845 Mathematical Star Quilt.
Mexican Rose Quilt
This Mexican Rose Quilt, referred to by the family as the Tulip and Vine, was donated to the Museum of Texas Tech University in 1953. It was gifted to the museum's founding director, Dr. William Curry Holden, by his mother, Grace Eleanor Davis Holden (1870-1951). Two years after her passing, he donated it to the museum.

Movies Represented in Fabric
Licensing of Disney products around their movies began in 1929 when Mickey Mouse was first featured on a children’s writing tablet. It is thought that the merchandizing around the Disney movies kept the studio afloat during the Great Depression (1929-1939).
When Alice in Wonderland opened on July 28, 1951, Disney entered into an agreement with the Percy Kent Company to place their images on feed sack bags.
Museum Quilt Used for Study
The American Quilt Study Group has a program in which members study antique quilts by reproducing them in wall-hanging size or by using the original quilt as inspiration. Through this process, participants learn about quilting techniques of the past.
The focus of the most recent quilt study was Quiltmakers and Designers: 1945 to 1979. For this project, participants selected a quilt made between 1945 and 1979 and reproduced it to explore the techniques used by quilters of that era.
