Even though we released both the Month 11 and 12 patterns for our 2023 Block of the Month, Homeward Bound by Sarah Fielke, earlier this month, we previously mentioned that Barbara Black was only going to provide her tips for Month 11 at this time. Well as an early treat, Barbara has decided to debut her Month 12 tips now so you can get a jumpstart on finishing that top for the Holiday season. She says, "We made it to Month 12! It's time to finish the final border with a stair-step unit. Then your top will be done!"
While we released the patterns for both Months 11 and 12 of the 2023 Block Of the Month, Homeward Bound by Sarah Fielke, Barbara Black will still be releasing her tips monthly for the rest of the year. So she returns with her tricks and tips for completing Month 11, where you will "add the 4 Hearts to the pieced borders made last month" and "make the 12 Cabins for the last border."
From the Quilt Alliance, "This month's block is made using three block units — a Pinwheel, four Chevron units, and four Corner units. Can't decide whether to work on your Halloween projects or this month's Homeward Bound blocks? Well, maybe Barbara Black can push you in one direction over the other as she's back with her monthly tips to help you make the 2023 TQS BOM as smoothly as possible. She says, "After spending 3 months on the wide applique border, you will like how quickly the pieced border goes in Month 10. There is just a small amount of applique, leaves, stems, and berries."

We’ll be building on that skill this month as we create smaller flying geese units for this block with a meaningful story. Inspired by her personal journey of starting to quilt by flying solo, before joining a gaggle of quilters in a guild, our designer for this month is the skilled artist and designer Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rd Story Workshop." We're halfway through September, which means we're halfway to the next set of patterns for the 2023 TQS BOM, Homeward Bound by Sarah Fielke. But if you haven't finished Month 9 yet, or just want to bookmark some reminders for later, Barbara Black has got another round of tips to help you out. This month she says you will be finishing "the wide applique borders by adding the Birds and more leaves."

Enter Barbara Black and her monthly tips and tricks. She says for this month you will be continuing "to add leaves and flowers to the wide appliqué borders."
In July, the Quilt Alliance is excited to share a foundation paper pieced block by Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill as part of their 30th Anniversary BOM. For some of you, this might be a new or daunting technique, but don't worry! The blog post has a ton of great tips, plus a link to a great tutorial from Sheri herself, who specializes in making this kind of sewing as easy as possible. Luckily our Block Of the Month expert Barbara Black is back as always with a catalog of tips to help you build your borders. She says, "It's time to start on the wide applique border that features lots of flowers, leaves and birds. We will work on these borders in Months 7, 8 and 9."

In 2008, we had an applique Block of the Month- and piecers were unhappy. In 2009, we had a pieced Block of the Month and appliquers were unhappy. So... in 2010 we had 2 Block of the Month quilts created by Sue Garman.
Month 3 of Homeward Bound, the 2023 TQS Block Of the Month designed by Sarah Fielke, means you'll be finishing the hollyhock blocks by adding small circles and leaves. Barbara Black is back with her monthly tips to help you conquer the 116 circles, in 5 different sizes, that make up the Hollyhock blocks.
It's a new year and as you probably already know, that means there is a brand new TQS Block Of the Month. This year's BOM is called Homeward Bound and is designed by Sarah Fielke. As always, The Quilt's Show's resident BOM expert Barbara Black will be there with you each month to guide you in making this fantastic quilt.
