Featured Quilt - The Grace Company Master Award for Traditional Artistry at Houston 2025

Today is the last day of Houston International Quilt Festival 2025, but don't fret if you can't make it to the show as we have plenty of great photos of the quilts that we will sharing with you. For now, while the show is still going, we bring another of the top-tier award winners direct from the floor. Poco A Poco by Keiko Morihiro is a quilt you may have seen and admired before. It won First Place - Hand Quilted Quilts (Sponsored by Arrow Sewing) at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2024, and this year won The Grace Company Master Award for Traditional Artistry at Houston 2025. Seeing the quilt is one thing, but knowing more about it brings a deeper appreciation for the hard work put into it. For example, did you know it features over 30,000 PIECES!

Keiko says of the time and effort she put into the quilt, "About ten years ago, I started working on a hexagonal quilt, but stopped halfway through because it had too many pieces. Four years ago, I started working on this quilt again and was finally able to complete it. The number of hexagonal pieces used to complete this quilt was 30,833. All the hexagonal pieces were quilted in rocking stitch, and each side of the hexagonal paper liner is 8mm long."

The 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival runs through today, October 12, 2025, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: An Artistic Tribute

"My Granny" by Lynn Czaban

My Granny is the first portrait quilt that Lynn made. It was constructed during a portrait class given by Bonnie Keller and inspired by Lynn's grandmother, who was an artist in her family and encouraged everyone to find a creative outlet and be artists too. This dedication to art made Lynn feel that she would be the perfect subject for her first portrait quilt.

Your Cover Shoot Is On the Horizon

Alex and Ricky used to have a magazine called The Quilt Life, and it featured great articles and quilts, sometimes from guests who have been on the show like this week's featured guest Lynn Czaban. While the magazine may no longer be in print, there are still plenty of great quilting magazines out there looking to discover the next big thing in quilting, and The Quilt Show could help you get there. Just hone and practice the skills you learn from watching the shows, submit what you've got, and pretty soon you too could be on a cover just like Alex and Ricky!
