Featured Quilt - Third Place Abstract at Houston 2025
Cheshire by Stephanie Skardal has won two awards this year, taking home Third Place - Abstract (Sponsored by Quilters Select) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025 and Second Place in the Windham Ruby + Bee 2025 Challenge at QuiltCon 2025. Stephanie says, "Cheshire was inspired by pushing boundaries with foundation paper piecing—how far and how extreme can you take this technique?! Five colors were selected after being designed digitally. The fabric was then cut via a laser cutter and foundation paper pieced. It was quilted on a longarm." |

Her evening suits embody the height of 1930s haute couture, owing to their intricate embellishments, luxurious textiles and severe tailoring. Her collaborations with Surrealist artists like Salvador Dali produced provocative, even shocking designs. Theatrical accessories such as the shoe-shaped hat, her ‘Tears’ dress patterned to look like torn flesh, and the uncanny ‘Skeleton’ dress complete with the dramatic outline of bones, represent Schiaparelli at her most radical." |
