Featured Quilt - Second Place Pieced at Houston 2025
Sprite Lightning by Barb Sorensen won Second Place - Pieced (Sponsored by AccuQuilt) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025. Barb created the quilt during a period when she was just playing around and experimenting with her design work, while the quilt's name came from a familial connection. She says, "I began this quilt just playing with bits of hand-painted fabric and scraps from previous projects, adding and deleting design elements as I worked and building shadow with discharge and quilting. I enjoy working with the design-as-you-go process. I had no idea what to name the finished quilt, so I sent out a “name that quilt” plea to my family. My granddaughter, Claire, named it. Thanks, Claire!"

Find Out Why Color Coordination Can Be Crucial
Marci Baker kicks things off by discussing the benefits of using a value tool, which helps quilters make more successful color selections for their projects. She explains how to choose a fabric collection that matches a quilt seen in a magazine or pattern — and how to create a second color combination for the same design. Her key tip: staying within a value group often produces the best results.

"Rhapsody in Green" by Jamie Wallen
Rhapsody in Green is a fairly small piece for Jamie, and was made from a piece of hand dyed Dupioni silk and quilted with metallic thread. It was made in the midst of many customer quilts that he was working on at the time, at a point where he needed a break. So he put the piece on his machine to play with and a beautiful quilt was born.
