Featured Quilt - "D"o You Think You Know What the Fourth Quilt In Janet Stone's Alphabet Series Looks Like?

Today we continue with our presentation of the quilts in Janet Stone's Alphabet series, currently hanging in the National Quilt Museum as part of her exhibit, Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!. Janet tells us that "each quilt contains the entire alphabet, not just a specific letter."

The fourth quilt is Love Letters, whose title is quite literally the inspiration for the quilt. Janet says, "Love Letters was inspired by an antique valentine that belonged to my mother-in-law. I found a chipboard alphabet set to use as a stencil for the letters. I was able to find the cotton/metallic gold fabric on the clearance rack, and I used it for the scroll part of the center heart. This was the first quilt I created a free motion feather design in the border, couched down a decorative metallic chord and managed to pull off a scallop border."

Janet's quilts in the series have been collected and presented together in her most recent book, Mutton But Letters!, which is available to purchase in her Etsy shop or in the gift shop of The National Quilt Museum.

And a fun fact from Janet about this quilt: "This quilt has no resemblance to the Valentine's card that inspired it."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: An "Ultraviolet" Delight

"Ultraviolet Radial" by Audrey Esarey

Ultraviolet Radial won Second Place - Small Wall Quilts: 1st Entry in an AQS Paducah Quilt Contest at AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah 2022, and is the thirteenth in the radial quilt series that Audrey has been working on since Fall 2018. All of the fabrics in the quilt are hand dyed, and using the dyes from the front of the quilt she dyed the back as well. This is the first quilt in her series that uses four smaller individual circles, while the previous entries in the series only had one large circle. The quilting throughout was done using her longarm.

Ring Around the Rosie, Some Tools To Make Your Quilts Cozy

You never know what things you'll need to make a quilt. You may have your standard checklist like needles, thread, and fabric, but does your list include washers? Audrey Esarey's does, as she uses them to weigh down her templates against her fabric when making her quilts. These handy little tips are why we love our guest's demos here at The Quilt Show, as they provide insight that we might never have thought of to help us make our quilts more easily and efficiently. So next time you're shopping for quilt supplies, maybe consider putting the hardware store on your list.
