Featured Quilt - "B"ecause You Asked, Here's Janet Stone's Second Alphabet Quilt

Last week we featured the first of Janet Stone's Alphabet series of quilts that are currently hanging in the National Quilt Museum as part of her exhibit, Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!. The response from our members was wonderful, and even Janet reached out to say how appreciative she was that we'll be featuring her quilts. However, she did let us know one small detail that we got wrong about the theme of her series. We said that each quilt corresponded to a letter of the alphabet, but Janet told us that actually, "each quilt contains the entire alphabet, not just a specific letter."

Janet also informed us that she has collected all of the quilts in the series together in her most recent book, Mutton But Letters!, which is available to purchase in her Etsy shop or in the gift shop of The National Quilt Museum. We'd like to thank Janet for this new information.

And with all that said and done, we'd like to present the second quilt in the series, Alpha Block Celebration. Janet says, "When I finished my first alphabet quilt, Letters From a Broad, a friend of mine asked me if the blocks I used in that quilt had anything to do with the letters they were with. I said, no, but that's a fabulous idea! I could make a quilt with traditional blocks whose names start with each letter of the alphabet! My personal challenge was to find blocks that contained more than 26 pieces. I hand sewed colored beads along the quilting lines to help the quilting show up. At the time, I didn't know about thicker weight threads that would have shown up better! I wanted to add the names of each block and decided to free motion embroider the names around the edge."

And a fun fact from Janet about this quilt: "The only block I paper pieced was the Log Cabin block so I could get those quarter inch lines straight."

Audrey Esarey and Vickie Wheatley Shine In An All New Show!

Cue the Curves and Build Some Birds

Audrey Esarey's work is recognized for its bold use of large, singular and overlapping circles, meticulously curved piecing, and dynamic contrasts of color that often create the illusion of overlapping forms reminiscent of watercolor studies. She has a deep love for color gradation and blends her hand-dyed solids with commercial fabrics to create rich, layered effects. Audrey demonstrates how to piece the arc of a Möbius radial using foundation paper piecing. Then she teaches her technique for cutting, preparing, and perfecting a ¼” precision-pieced irregular curved seams.

Plus, Louisville fiber artist Vickie Wheatley shares how to design and build small fused and stitched art compositions using simple shapes of hand-dyed fabrics.
