Featured Quilt - A "Slippery" Set of Dots
Slippery One by Deb Schultz Grimes was featured in the Alternative Techniques category at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025. Deb used the dotting technique by Kyra Reps to achieve the spectacular dot effect that adorns the perimeter of her designs as they radiate outward.
As for all the rest of the work that went into making this stunning quilt, Deb says, "My quilts focus on lines, circles, and arcs in radiating configurations developed to draw in the viewer's eye, and at the same time satisfy my fastidious need for order and repetition. Dyes, sun printing with a modified commercial stencil, acrylic paints, and threads of various weights were combined to give shape and texture to the quilt. Vibrant colors were used to draw attention and keep me smiling as I work and achieve the order I desire."
If you'd like to learn how to execute Kyra's dotting technique too, then you can see how she does it right here at The Quilt Show by watching her in Learn Kaleidoscope Mandalas with Appliqué and Dot Painting with Kyra Reps | Different Ways to Use Appliqués with Sondrasa. "The Mermaid's Laundry" by Alethea Ballard
The Mermaid's Laundry is Alethea's brother's favorite quilt. It probably isn't that hard to see why. What exactly does a mermaid have to hang on a laundry line anyway? We don't really know, but we sure think it was an inventive way for Alethea to utilize multiple fabrics to create the wonderfully playful scene of The Mermaid's Laundry.
