Featured Quilt - Outstanding Machine Stationary Quilting at Road to California 2026

Road to California 2026 wrapped up yesterday, concluding another successful edition of the show featuring hundreds of spectacular quilts. One participant was no stranger to quilt shows, or winning awards for that matter, and took home Outstanding Machine Stationary Quilting. Who is it you may ask? Why, it's Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry of course, who won for her quilt Tricuspid Biomorph #1, which she actually began working on over thirty years ago.

She says, "For Tricuspid Biomorph #1, I resurrected a series of doodles I drew in 1995 based on radially symmetrical hexagons. I placed the hexagonal shape in a rectangle and played with it, extending the lines within the hexagon to the edges of the rectangle and tweaking them until I had a line drawing I liked. I filled the spaces between the lines with color gradations and images of fabric which I hand painted with dye."

Learn from Caryl right here at The Quilt Show by watching her in How to Do Applipiecing and a Studio Visit with Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A "Jewel" of a Quilt

"Black Jewel #1" by Angie E. Knowles

Black Jewel #1 is one of the earlier pieces made by Angie after she had taken a two-year program with Jane Dunnewold. What she learned most from that program was how to work with color. This quilt began as all black fabric, with Angie removing the color and then adding it back in to create the beautiful colored hexagons that dance throughout. The piece was inspired by one of her favorite artists, Mondrian, and his work that is defined by black lines that surround patches of color.
