Featured Quilt - Breaking Through the "Ceiling"

Glass Ceiling by Sherrill Ash was featured in the Pictorial category (Sponsored by World of Quilts Travel) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025. Using a Gridwork concept from Katie Pasquini Masopust to execute her design, the inspiration for Sherrill's quilt came from another artist who works in a completely different medium. She says, "This quilt is based on a photograph I took inside the Glasshouse at Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle, WA. I divided the enlarged photo into a grid and improvisationally pieced each section before joining them with tiny sashing."

Learn Rust Dyeing with Angie E. Knowles

Are You "Rusty" on Rust Dyeing? Learn The Basics From Angie

Early in her rust-dyeing journey, Angie E. Knowles used rusted pieces of metal to dye fabric. Later, she discovered an old recipe book that explained how to dye using iron powder. After experimenting with different approaches, she refined the process.

Learn how to mix your own dye solution and how to protect yourself and your work surface before applying the rust dye to the fabric. Angie shows how adding guar gum to the dye enables screen printing on rust-dyed fabric, using a large feather design on a rusted background as an example.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A "Sweet" Quilt To See

"Sweet Surrender" by Cindy Seitz-Krug

Sweet Surrender was named as such because to Cindy it looked like chocolate and strawberries, and who wouldn't want to surrender for that? With each piece she does Cindy likes to leave a lot of area to quilt, so the simple LeMoyne stars that are laid out so precisely are surrounded by fabulous machine quilting. That quilting has won Cindy numerous awards for Sweet Surrender, including Best Machine Workmanship at the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show in Nashville, TN and Third Place - Merit Machine Quilting at the Houston International Quilt Festival.
