Featured Quilt - Outstanding Artistry at Road to California 2026
Sahara Lion by Lys Axelson won Outstanding Artistry at Road to California 2026. The inspiration for the quilt comes from the mighty and majestic creature for which it was named. She says, "The Sahara lion is a subspecies of the now extinct Barbaray lion, known for its magnificent dark mane, and is unlike the robust lions of the Serengeti Plains and other sub-African habitats with their large prides, lounging in the shade, watching over herds of prey. The Sahara lion is lithe and handsome and adapted to the desert, where prey and water are scarce. Those still existing in the Southern Sahara are threatened by hunting and habitat loss."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Serene "Solitude" |

"Solitude" by Judith Phelps
Solitude won Judith the The Superior Threads Master Award For Thread Artistry at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024, and was created for a challenge with the theme of Water Works. She says, “The inspiration for this quilt came from a photo taken by Jimmy Debacker. It is used with his permission. I love the way he captured the sky, water, and boat and gave a sense of isolation. The quilt was hand-painted and then thread-painted. It is three-layers and “made-for-storytellers” with the theme—"Water Works.” The quilt was made to be viewed from both sides.”
