Featured Quilt - Outstanding Abstract Design at Road to California 2026
Embers by Barbara Danzi received the award for Outstanding Abstract Design at Road to California 2026. On her approach to creating the abstract look of her quilt, Barbara said, "I designed this abstract quilt at my design wall by cutting shapes and lines freehand and arranging figure and ground to create interesting negative space. It's important to me that you can see the hand of the maker. I designed this to display vertically, but when I turned it 90 degrees, the abstract design evokes the feelings of a warm campfire glow." |

The Secret to Judith's Two-Sided Quilts Lies in the Preparation
Judith Phelps and Ricky examine an early quilt where the appliqué was first sewn into place before quilting. Later, she discovered that the process could be streamlined by using thread painting, which added detailed color while also securing the appliqué in a single step.
Judith shares her technique for anchoring a quilt top between layers of batting and interfacing—a method that ensures all layers stay together as one, providing exceptional stability and preventing puckering during intensive thread painting while preserving a smooth, dimensional surface.
