Featured Quilt - Taking a Polar Plunge
Isbjørn by Ricki Selva won a First Place ribbon at Road to California 2026 and was featured in the Animal Category. Ricki's quilt takes its inspiration from a photo by Kasey Carrothers, used with their permission, and features an adorable outing in what we can only assume is some very cold water. The style of the quilt may seem similar to that of some other quilts we've featured before. That's because Ricki's quilt was made using the techniques she learned in TQS guest Sandra Mollon's workshop.
Ricki says, "This bear was bored...so bored he swam out to a boat off the coast of Svalbard, Norway, where my friend, Kasey Carrothers, had been observing him. This rare and precious encounter, gave me the perfect subject for my first workshop with Sandra Mollon. I've worked in textile collage before. (Thanks, Susan Carlson!) Sandra's methodology was a perfect fit for me. It will take the passionate actions of the entire world to save our precious Ice Bears.”
Want to learn how to make a quilt like this? Learn some of Sandra's techniques by watching her right here in How to Do Embellished Appliqué with Sandra Mollon | Pieced Block Border with Sheila Sinclair Snyder.

"Sovereignty" a Quilt Top by Tara Miller
Sovereignty is a quilt top that Tara made based off of an antique quilt in her collection called a Mohawk Trail. Tara recreated the exact sizing of the antique, taking a piece of paper up to it and tracing the size and everything, to get it just right. However, she went her own rogue way with the fabric to realize her vision of this quilt.
