Featured Quilt - Second Place Handwork at QuiltCon 2026

Bloom, Becoming, Intrepid, Flourish by Heidi Parkes won Second Place - Handwork (Sponsored by DuckaDilly) at QuiltCon 2026. Heidi's quilts came to be when she decided to upcycle a handkerchief she got from the Oedo Market into a now award-winning quilt. She says, "An antique handkerchief purchased in Tokyo began disintegrating with my first few stitches. I might've thrown it away, but instead, I saw an opportunity to offer care, compassion, and support - just as I'd seen in the tree crutches ubiquitous throughout Japan. This was an opportunity to "verb" an experience in cloth, and add material meaning with an "artifact." The hours of sewing were easy to source - I stitched the handkerchief in place while on our tour bus."

PLUS, We Come Back to Paducah for More Quilting Goodness

Carol Ann McCandless rocketed to fame in the quilt world when she took a leap of faith and said yes to a design firm's bold request: creating two oversized art quilts for an apartment building outside Nashville, TN. Learn how her work as a floral designer, her experience at Ethan Allen, and her years as a professional longarmer gave her the vision and skills needed to take on such a monumental project.

Carol Ann shares the tips and tricks she discovered for scaling a design from sketch to finished quilt, and she demonstrates how to transform a simple composition notebook into a personalized junk journal filled with creative ephemera and hand stitching. Then, see how two Paducah artists, Deb Lyons and Char Downs, are honoring famous quilts and celebrating the art of quiltmaking through vibrant quilt murals.

Textile Talks: Gillian Cooper - Fragments of the Past

Turning One Step At a Time Into The Big Time

Presented by SAQA: "One step, one mark, one stitch. On their own, they are fairly meaningless, but repeated and gathered together, these ordinary everyday acts turn into something more consequential - a walk, a drawing, a textile. This presentation shares Gillian Cooper’s reflections on a journey through 4 years of process driven practice, walking, drawing and stitching, using the framework of a Masters in Contemporary Art and Archaeology with the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland."

Register today and watch when this episode airs this Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 2 PM EDT.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Loving "Heart"

"The Healing Heart" by Jane Dunnewold

The Healing Heart was the first quilt that Jane got into a National competition, and the first piece she had in the Visions Exhibition in San Diego when TQS Quilt Legend Michael James was a juror. Michael commented to Jane that she had a really fresh take on utilizing a heart in the quilt, which she was thrilled about because it was drawn by Jane's daughter when she was four or five years old. Jane took that drawing and had it silkscreened so that it could be added to the quilt's overall design and become one of its primary elements, hence the title of the quilt.
